Boombal is a relatively new type of folk dance party in Belgium, coming from French bal folk. The partygoers participate in pair, ring, line, and string dances such as the waltz, polka, An Dro, and others adapted from the French bal folk scene. The activities are perceived as a more sociable and joyful alternative to the individualistic dancing that is common in current clubs. There is a relatively low entry barrier because the emphasis is on having fun rather than perfectly performed and sophisticated routines.
History of Boombal Festival
Boombal originated in Ghent, Belgium, when accordion instructor Wim Claeys encouraged his students to perform in front of a live dancing audience. The inaugural Boombal was held in September 2000 in an old furniture store, with approximately 5 couples participating. This shop was located on the Boomstraat (lit. tree-street), hence the event’s name. A year later, the Boombal concept had evolved significantly, and with over 100 attendees, the event was moved to the Volkshuis van de Dampoort in Ghent. Another relocation was required to the larger intercultural center ‘De Centrale’.
Boombal became an established and popular idea in Belgium in 2006, with events taking place primarily in and around college cities. Similar gatherings, known as Folkbal, are gaining popularity in the Netherlands. The concept is gradually gaining favor in other neighboring nations as well.
